Treescape around St. Armands CircleTree Benefits

TreeScapes Make a Greener Economy

Urban greenscapes are more than mere aesthetics, they represent urban natural capital.

Mature and canopy trees increase the value of residential and commercial properties, based on widely-recognized livability factors.

Treescaping increases residential property values by an average of 5-9% and general property values by a median of 19% and tree scaped properties sell more rapidly. By contrast, a direct relationship seems to exist between decreases in a property’s value and its distance from any visible greenscape. For landlords, street landscapes significantly boost residential and commercial tenant occupancy and reduce turnover.

Greenscapes make pleasing and memorable first impressions and are persuasive features in business and recreational tourism. Mature trees and extension greenery create an ideal consumer habitat that generates favorable customer assumptions and perception. Environmental psychologists confirm that consumers prefer landscaped shopping districts and will pay up to 12% more for services and as much as 50% more for convenience goods, from merchants located in green spaces. A series of random surveys showed that nearly 75% preferred to patronize landscaped commercial districts and studies indicate clients and consumers will travel longer and over greater distances to do so.

The economic advantage of trees and greenery appears grounded in perception and image - the confidence that nurtured treescapes reflect greater amenities, special service, quality goods and a more affirmative lifestyle.
