Right Tree, Right Space
Go Native. Our native trees and plants are best suited to grow and thrive in our climate, weather and soil. They’re resilient to drought, the Ph of local soil, seasonal changes and sunlight cycles. Their proven endurance in tropical storms and hurricanes make them ideal buffers against storm damage to your homes and roofs.
Natives also provide the most useful habitat for the animal life of our region. Trees introduced from outside this environment will be weak and vulnerable to disease. Even worse, some may be harmful to our native vegetation.
-
Don’t plant trees too close to your home, driveway, sidewalks or other man-made structures.
-
Select trees whose form (layered, weeping, columnar, spreading, and full-crowned or fountain) and size match your space needs and capabilities.
-
Survey your chosen location for soil condition, check the fertility and Ph, as well as adequate drainage and exposure.
Finally, check the hardiness of a tree’s ability to survive in your geographic region. For your convenience, we’ve included hardiness levels to the inventory in the Tree Catalogue. For best results, choose your trees from the many species within the 9A-10A hardiness zones.
